Mildred Block

Mildred Elizabeth Block, age 99, passed away April 22, 2013 at Vintage Park, Paola, Kansas. Mildred was born August 13, 1913 to John and Dora Prothe Block of Block, Kansas. She was baptized August 24, 1913 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended grade school at Trinity Lutheran School, Block and was confirmed April 10, 1927. At age 14 she stayed with family members and helped with the chores of farming, gardening, and household duties. By the time she was 17, she had secured a job as a housekeeper and caregiver for Sol and Matilda Winetroub of Paola, Kansas. Mildred lived with the Winetroub family until their deaths. She continued as housekeeper for several Paola families until her retirement. In the 1970s Mildred bought a farm house near the original family farm north of Fontana. She cared for her mother in her home for twenty years and stayed there until her move to Vintage Park. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Paola, Kansas and was involved in helping to form the first youth group known at the time as Walther League. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Raymond and Leonard Block, and one sister Wilma Ohlmeier. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Richard Block, also her caregiver, Paola, Kansas; Leslie and Wanda Block, Arkansas City, Kansas; Vivian and Roger Limback, Alma, Missouri; and Leona and Gary Smith, Paola, Kansas.
