Michael J. Stine, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lawrence, Kansas. Born on July 1, 1946, in Ottawa, he was a lifelong resident of the community that he held dear.
Mike graduated from Ottawa High School in the Class of 1964. Following his education, he forged a successful career in the automotive and finance industries. Throughout the years, Mike contributed his expertise to several esteemed establishments, including Golden Johnson Auto Parts, Interstate Finance Co., Chuck's Auto Parts, Town and Country Supply, and Midwest Cabinet. His dedication to his work led to a fulfilling career until his retirement in 2010.
In addition to his professional life, Mike was a passionate sports fan. He followed University of Kansas basketball, proudly supported the Kansas City Chiefs, and cheered for the Kansas City Royals. A notable accomplishment of his was scoring two perfect 300 point games in bowling, a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. Mike was also an active member of the Ottawa Men's Bowling Association, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow bowlers.
Faith played a significant role in Mike's life as he was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ottawa and later a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. His community engagements extended beyond religion; he was also a member of the Aerie Lodge 2700 Fraternal Order of Eagles of Ottawa. Mike also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years after his retirement and enjoyed visiting with everyone on his delivery route.
Family was at the heart of Mike's life. He was united in marriage to Karen Pound on August 19, 1965, in Ottawa, and together they nurtured a loving family. She survives of the home.
Along with his devoted wife, Mike is survived by his daughter Michelle Duker (Kenneth), of Ottumwa, Iowa; his daughter Cindy Taylor (Michael), of Spring, Texas; and his son Michael J. Stine II (Danielle), of Gardner, Kansas. He shared a special bond with his sister Dolores Richeson of Ozawkie, Kansas.
A proud grandfather, Mike cherished his time with his grandchildren: Cade Duker, Evan Duker (Keyanna), and Noah Duker. They were a source of immense joy for him.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Michael Stine, and his mother, Zella Marie (Sink) Stine. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication that will remain in the hearts of all who knew him, including his beloved pet dog, Bella.
His contributions to his family, friends, and community will be fondly remembered. Mike's spirit of generosity, love for sports, and commitment to family will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
