Mell D. Martin, age 82, of Pomona, Kansas, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Select Specialty Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born on Wednesday, March 27, 1929, in Estalene, Texas, the son of William and Virgie (Ward) Martin. He lived in Pomona since 2007, moving from Ottawa, where he had lived since 1996. He previously lived in Kansas City, Missouri for many years and also in Texas. He was a long time mechanic and machinist. He was owner and operator of Martin Machinery in Ottawa from 1990 to 2009. For many years prior, he operated machine shops in Kansas and Missouri. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Church of God Seventh Day in Kansas City, Missouri, and attended Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ottawa. On Saturday, November 9, 1985, Mell was united in marriage with Edith Price in Kansas City, Missouri. She survives of their home. He is survived by his: Wife-Edith Martin of the home; Son-Robert Martin of Pearl City, Hawaii; Daughter-Clara Sue Barati and her husband, Houshang, of Kansas City, Missouri; Son-Michael Martin of Salt Lake City, Utah; Son-Mark Martin of Kansas City, Kansas; Daughter-Sandra Dee Haney and her husband, Robert, of Houston, Missouri; Son-Ken Berry and his wife, Terri, of Overbrook, Kansas; Son-Charles Berry and his wife, Cheryl, of Eudora, Kansas; Daughter-Ruth Roe of Kansas City, Missouri; Daughter-in-law-Rachel Martin of Williamsburg, Kansas; Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his: Parents-William and Virgie Martin; Son-Doren D. Martin; Son-David Ray Martin and Son-William Max Martin. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. IN STATE: Mr. Martin will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends from 7:30 to 8:30 Monday evening.
