Melda N. Cutting, 101, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Vintage Park of Ottawa. Funeral Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Family will meet with friends from 1:30 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. prior to service. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. She was born on Monday, February 5, 1912, in Waverly, Kansas, the daughter of Lucien Riley and Della (Ashley) Giffin. Melda grew up in Waverly and lived in Wichita until moving to Ottawa in 1968. She graduated from Waverly High School with the class of 1930 and from Wichita Comptometer School in 1931. On March 21, 1936 Melda was united in marriage with Frank Sherrick in Wichita, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1966. She then married Joel M. Cutting on August 25, 1968 in Ottawa. He preceded her in death on July 21, 1989. Survivors include two step-daughters, Ann Ackerman of Marysville, and LuAnne Debrick of Paola; 6 step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Frank Sherrick; 2nd husband, Joel Cutting; step-daughter, Joyce Basinger; parents, Riley and Della Giffin; brother, Riley Giffin, Jr.; two sisters, Maxine Jones and Leola Newton. Melda worked for Meadow Gold/Beatrice Foods for twenty-five years as a comptometer operator from 1930 to 1955. She also worked temporarily doing inventories at Moberly West and Calvin and later Elmer-Fox Accounting both of Wichita. She helped a friend in an engraving business at Ash Craft and was a counselor for Beauty Counselors of Wichita. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Good Sam Camping Club both of Ottawa. Former member of Eastern Star Ida Leaf #75 and Professional Women’s Club both of Wichita.
