Max Flager

April 4, 1941 — November 9, 2006

Max Floyd Flager was born on Friday, April 4, 1941, in Ottawa, Kansas. He was the son of Floyd M. and Forna P. (Rosenbaum) Flager. Max was a lifelong resident of Pomona, Franklin County, Kansas, until his death on Thursday, November, 9, 2006, at the age of sixty-five years. Max graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1959. Max spent his life farming, raising livestock, and as a commercial alfalfa grower. He served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1961 until 1967. He was a member of the Pomona United Methodist Church. Max loved his job, farming was a true enjoyment for him. If he wasn't in the field, he would want to be with his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he loved them all deeply. He was always excited to see all of his family at holidays and reunions. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling to see his family. You could always talk him into going to the casinos also. On November 27, 1967, Max was united in marriage with Jeannette Kerwin at Pomona. She survives of their home. Max is also survived by his mother; son, Max F. Flager, II and his wife, Kim, of Pomona, Kansas; two daughters, Angie Corwine and her husband, Mitch, of Michigan Valley, Kansas, Traci Hower and her husband, Stacy, of Pomona, Kansas; sister, Judy Hull and her husband, Arville, of Pomona, Kansas; four grandsons, Kyle Whittington, Gage Flager, Cameron Hower, Nathan Hower; and three granddaughters, Bailey Whittington, Ainsley Corwine, and Samantha Hower. He is preceded in death by his father. To All Max's Family and Friends His children, so different but so much alike in their love for their father: Max, his farming buddy, his sounding board, his 'boss': They never missed a day without talking at least once; planning their day. He so missed being in the field these last months. Angie, the one he liked to get stirred up just so he could argue with her. Always in constant competition; whether they were racing down a hill on snow skis, playing cards, or playing basketball. She has his competitive spirit. Traci, born into the family as a teenager: Her bond with him was instant, deep and everlasting. In many ways she was just like him. They both had the gift for gab and walking loudly through the house. Mitch, his farming confidant and mentor. They loved discussing crops and alfalfa although they wouldn't always agree they greatly respected each others opinions. He liked helping Stacy learn about farming and machinery. He enjoyed the bantering between the two of them. He appreciated Kim keeping 'The Flager Shop & Chat' stocked with coffee and pop. He enjoyed getting to know her through their many talks in the shop. Grandkids- He couldn't wait to have grandkids to finish filling his life. Never being left alone to smoke by the fireplace- they would pile around him. Papa loved playing rock-a-baby which always ended in laughing and screaming. Judy & Arville, his coffee companions: They had a great time together fishing in Minnesota. Dad would constantly remind Judy of how annoying she was as a little sister. Always chatting at him and getting in his way. Bryan, Kyle and Adrian- He thoroughly enjoyed teaching them the joys and frustrations of being a farmer. They were his young farming buddies. Kerwin/Verhulst Family- His favorite home away from home was in South Dakota. His gambling partner-in-crime was his father-in-law, Pete. They spent their time dodging his mother-in-law, Cora, and his wife while hiding out in the casinos. He liked spending hours on the phone chatting with Cora and traveling with his in-laws and the rest of the Kerwin family. He was thrilled when Kellie and Kealy moved in; ending the empty nest syndrome. He loved his community. If you ever wanted to find him, he was at the shop shooting the breeze and drinking coffee with his friends and neighbors or just stopping by to say hello. Dad lived his life to the fullest. We admire how he took care of the people around him: his family, friends and neighbors. Everybody who knew him loved him. We will miss him dearly, but we will celebrate his life and the legacy he left behind. He left this earth surrounded by the love of his family and friends. To those of you who were there that night; words cannot express what it meant to us to have you there. We would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this time.
