Maudie Mattie Ellen Blacketer Hughbanks October 27, 1922 to September 19, 2009 86 years old Maudie Mattie Ellen Blacketer Hughbanks was born October 27, 1922 in Follett, Texas, to Raymond Ernest and Fareda Elizabeth Gifford Blacketer. She was baptized on December 10, 1922 at St. Peter"s Church in Woodward, Oklahoma. Maudie was united in marriage to Leo Ray Hughbanks on July 1, 1939 in Maryville, Missouri. She was a housewife and crew cook for whatever farm her husband worked for. On November 26, 1940 their daughter Lola E. Hughbanks was born. They moved to Topeka, Kansas where Maudie worked for several restaurants, the Red Rooster, Tenpenny caf", and a couple others over the years. When her husband had a stroke in 1970 Maudie was his cheerleader and moral support. She went to work then went straight to the hospital to help take care of him. When he was released she helped him with his therapy and retraining process. In 1971 Maudie and Leo moved their trailer down to Paola, Kansas to the Wolf farm. Maudie worked, helped in the garden, as well as taking care of her husband Leo and her three grandchildren. In 1972 she lost her son-in-law John D. Wolf. When her daughter had trouble dealing with it and taking care of her three children Maudie stepped in and took over making sure her grandchildren were provided for. This meant feeding them, doing their laundry, getting them to school functions and anything else that might come up. She was a wonderful caregiver and will be long remembered for her contribution to their lives. Maudie worked at the Palomino Club as the cook for several years until it closed then she started cooking at the Paola Country Club. She worked there until her health got bad and she had to retire at the age of 62. She was a fantastic cook and did cooking on the side. She was famous for her cookies, pies, and cinnamon rolls just to mention a few. She also baked and decorated cakes for people including at least 3 wedding cakes. She was still able to cook and bake until 2001. She lost her husband on November 29, 1983. Shortly after that she moved to the Sunflower II apartments where she lived until a fall and problems during rehab caused her to move to a nursing home. Maudie loved to have people over to visit and would always cook them a meal to eat while they were there. She was the perfect hostess. Maudie loved to have her family over especially at holidays and birthdays. When she cooked a meal you never went hungry and there were always plenty of leftovers to split up and take home. She loves to cook, read, sew, embroider, and do crafts, which she loved to share with when guest arrived. She made several lap blankets to give to hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities that might need them. She was always baking cookies for the many functions her grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in. Family was very important to Maudie, so much co that she kept a photo album near her for her enjoyment. Whenever she had company it seemed like they would end up going through the album with her. She loved to do puzzles, play yahtzee, and upwards especially during the holiday family gatherings. Maudie spent the last eight years of her life living at North Point Nursing Home. She passed away September 19, 2009 at 11:28 pm in the company of her family and caregivers. Everyone at North Point loved Maudie and took care of her as if she was part of their family. We thank them for their love and devotion to our beloved grandmother. Maudie was a special woman, one that if you had the privilege to meet you would never forget.
