Matthew F. Egidy age 97 of Paola, passed away February 4 at the North Point Skilled Nursing Center. He was born in Greeley, Kansas on July 6, 1919 to Henry F. and Theresa Zormiere Egidy. He spent his youth in Greeley attending St. John the Baptist Catholic School. He spent his early years working on the family farm and later moved to Paola, Kansas. He was the owner and operator of Egidy-Williams Implement, a Massey-Harris dealership. He later worked for a local dairy distributor. He served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1944. He received medical training at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and became a surgical technician. He served in North Africa participating in seven battles and campaigns in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Rome, Italy, southern France, the Rhineland area in Germany and Central Europe. After his discharge he returned to Paola where he met and married Martha Ann McBride on May 12, 1953. He and Martha operated a hay farm in Northwest Paola for many years. Martha preceded her husband in death in 2008. Matthew had four sisters and a brother all who have preceded him in death. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and his devoted caregivers, Tom and Debbi Duncan and sister-in-law Hazel Mitchell. Memorial contributions may be made to Miami County Veterans Memorial.
