Mary Elizabeth Betty McKinnis, 84, of Ottawa, Kansas died on Saturday, February 7, 2009. She was born on Saturday, June 21, 1924, in Cumberland, Maryland. She was the daughter of Anna Riley. She grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Following her military service, she lived in Springfield, Missouri, moving to Girard, Kansas in 1954 and Ottawa in 1966. She graduated from Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) High School. Betty was an office assistant for her husband who owned and operated T & W Refrigeration and Heating Company in Ottawa. Betty served her country in the United States Coast Guard. She was a member of Union Chapter #15, Order of the Eastern Star and Soroptomist Club. On April 21, 1946, Betty was united in marriage with G. Edward MCKinnis, Jr. in New York, New York. They were both in the Coast Guard at the time and were serving on Ellis Island. He preceded her in death on August 9, 2008. Survivors include: Daughter-Nancy Mell & her husband, Tim, of Ottawa, Kan. Daughter-Lynne Griffith of Ottawa, Kan. Sister-Thelma Wilson-Pittsburgh, Pa. Granddaughter-Kayla Mell of Ottawa, Kan. Grandson-Douglas Thompson of Galion, Ohio Granddaughter-Deborah McDaniel of Jacksonville, Fla. Great Grandson-Adam Mell-Tomberlin Great Grandson-Nicholas Schrader Great Granddaughter-Amanda Schrader Great Granddaughter-Kylie Thompson She was preceded in death by: Husband-G. Edward McKinnis, Jr. Mother-Anna Riley Son-Clinton McKinnis Brother-Roger McKinnis Sister-Melba Jackson SERVICES: Private family services will be held at a later date. CEMETERY: Girard Cemetery.
