Mary Margaret Thomas, 87, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away surrounded by her family on April 5, 2019. Mary was born on March 14, 1932 to Roy and Vivian Mayes of Hillsdale, Kansas. She moved with her parents to Eugene, Oregon in 1937, where they lived for seven years before returning to Kansas. As a young lady, she showed horses at the American Royal and was awarded grand champion in 1948. She graduated from Paola High School in 1950 and took classes at Fort Scott Community College which helped her to become a metal health technician. She worked in that capacity at the Osawatomie State Hospital for 29 years, retiring in 1982. Mary married Roy Thomas in 1957. They enjoyed fishing, hunting, and raising and training many bird dogs during their early years. Mary also enjoyed cooking, reading, embroidery and playing duplicate bridge. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and brother. She is survived by her son, Ernest “Tom” Thomas and his wife, Sami, of Osawatomie, two granddaughters and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are her daughter, Kathy Thomas, and husband Don Smith of Olathe, KS. The family would like to express their thanks to Olathe Hospice for their care and assistance. No service is planned. Private interment at Hillsdale Cemetery.
