Mary Frances Harlan was born May 31, 1907, at Waverly, Kansas. She was the daughter of Louis Edwin and Neva Maude (Hendrix) Smiley. In 1917, Mary moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home until her death Friday, November 7, 2003, at the age of ninety-six years. She attended Ottawa schools. She was a homemaker. She worked at the L & L Cafe in Ottawa two years and also at the Ottawa Country Club. She was a member of Community Foursquare Church in Ottawa. Mary enjoyed various kinds of handwork, especially, quilting. She created many lovely items through the years for her family and friends to enjoy. In her spare time, Mary also liked to read. On April 18, 1924, Mary was united in marriage with Robert McAuley at Great Bend, Kansas. They later divorced. On August 5, 1946, she married Glenn Harlan at Olathe, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1954. She is also preceded in death by her parents; four sons, Jack McAuley, Donald Lee McAuley, Ronald D. McAuley, Glenn McAuley; three brothers, Charles Smiley, Edger Smiley, Harry Smiley; sister, Rosezetta Allen; and two half-sisters, Pansy Robinson and Opal Ruble. Mrs. Harlan is survived by ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Smiley of Ottawa; and many nephews and nieces, including Charlotte Rocker of Ottawa, and Neva May Smiley of Lawrence, Kansas. SERVICES: Family and friends will meet at the Dengel & Son Mortuary at noon Tuesday, November 11, 2003, and process to Highland Cemetery for 1 p.m. graveside services. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Clyde Greisen, Community Foursquare Church. IN STATE: Mrs. Harlan will lie in state after 8:30 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2003 at Dengel & Son Mortuary to the service hour. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery in Ottawa, Kansas MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Community Foursquare Church or the American Heart Association c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, KS 66067.
