Mary Alice Mealman

Mary Alice Mealman was born on Sunday, June 29, 1919, in Pomona, Kansas. She was the daughter of Roy Warren and Winifred (Lane) Nelson. A lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident, Mary Alice made her home in Ottawa from the 1950’s until her death on Friday, December 5, 2008, at the age of eighty-nine years. Mary Alice graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1938 and attended Lawrence Business College. She worked nineteen years as a secretary for Federal Crop Insurance in Ottawa, retiring in 1982. In the 1980’s, she was an Administrative Assistant for the Ottawa University Athletic Department. She was a member of Richter United Methodist Church and Pomona Chapter #305, Order of the Eastern Star for over sixty years. Mary Alice was an outgoing lady with a wonderful sense of humor. She never knew a stranger and loved joking and visiting with those around her. She enjoyed spending time with her family and had so much fun with her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, going out to eat, and playing cards with her friends. She was also an avid K. U. Basketball fan. On October 3, 1953, Mary Alice was united in marriage with Leo E. Mealman in Ottawa, Kansas. He survives of their home. She is also survived by her daughter, Shirley Mae Fritts and her husband, Charles; granddaughter, Sherry Lea Harris and her husband, Albert; great-granddaughter, Adreyanna Sharp; and great-grandson, Zachary Harris, all of Ottawa, Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, L. E. “Jack” Nelson; son, Robert Andrew Mealman; and sister-in-law, Golden Nelson. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008, with services by Pomona Chapter # 305 Order of the Eastern Star. IN STATE: Mrs. Mealman will lie in state at the Dengel Son Mortuary after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 Tuesday evening. CEMETERY: Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Richter United Methodist Church or Pomona Chapter # 305, Order of the Eastern Star, c/o Dengel Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
