Marvin E. “Tobe” Ross, 83, of Ottawa, Kansas died Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Cremation is planned. Memorial Services will be held at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Family will meet with friends to pay their respects to Mr. Ross at Dengel & Son Mortuary, from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday evening. Inurnment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. He was born on Wednesday, January 15, 1930 near Fontana, Kansas, the son of Walter and Marilla (Carpenter) Ross. Tobe lived in Ottawa since 1961 moving from Pleasanton, Kansas. He graduated from Parker High School, Parker, Kansas with the class of 1947 and attended the University of Kansas. On June 6, 1956 Tobe was united in marriage with Darlene Johnston in Garnett, Kansas. She survives of the home. Also surviving are his daughter, Sharon Ross & Carl Braxton of Los Angeles, California, son, Allen Ross and Karen of Ottawa, and son, John Ross & Cheri Bowden of Ottawa; four grandchildren, Nathanael, Shane, Jaclyn and Travis Ross; and brother, Kenneth Ross and wife Gerry of Parker, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Marilla Ross; brothers, Richard, Wilfred, Dennis and Ivan Ross; sisters, Dorothy Gillespie and Doris Ross. Tobe worked for the Kansas City Power & Light as a lineman/tree trimmer for thirty-one years before retiring in 1985. Tobe’s favorite activities were always centered on his family and grandchildren who meant the world to him. He enjoyed nature and fishing and was a musician all his life. He was a band leader for Country Gentleman Dance Band and played the guitar and sang. Tobe served in the United States Army as a Radio Technician during the Korean War from April 1951 to April 1953. His decorations and citations included Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and two overseas bars. He was a member of the First Christian Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 where he served as former Commander and Chaplin for many years; Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ottawa; Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and IBEW, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Kansas City, Missouri.
