Martin Murle “Sonny” Honn, 88, of Garnett, Kansas passed away Sunday, August 18, 2024, at Anderson County Hospital RLC, Garnett, Kansas.
Services will be held 10:00am, Friday, August 23, 2024, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa.
Family will greet friends 5:30-7:30pm, Thursday, August 22, 2024, also at the funeral home.
Interment Garnett Cemetery, Garnett, Kansas.
Martin was born Saturday, September 21, 1935, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Marion L. and Alta L. (Dirksen) Honn.
He grew up in Greeley, Kansas and also lived in Garnett, Kansas before moving to Ottawa, Kansas in 1978.
Sonny graduated from Greeley High School with the class of 1954.
He was united in marriage on June 19, 1955, in Greeley, Kansas to Lenora “Snooky” Humbert. She preceded him in death on July 27, 2013.
Martin spent more than thirty years in the oil industry, working as an inspector on refinery equipment. He worked on anything including piping, valves, and everything else that went into the refinery. Martin made many friends during his career and enjoyed his work.
He was a life member of the Aerie Lodge 2700 Fraternal Order of Eagles of Ottawa and a former member of Ottawa Lodge #18 A.F. & A.M. in Ottawa.
Sonny enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with his lovely wife Snooky who was a talented musician herself, playing the piano and keyboard, along with their son Mike on the guitar. When he wasn’t working or playing his guitar, Martin enjoyed bowling, and being outdoors playing horseshoes, fishing or hunting. He always had a smile at the mention of his family, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Along with his wife Snooky, he was preceded in death by parents Marion and Alta; son Mike Honn; brother Ronald Honn; and sister Betty Strain.
Survivors include son Eric Honn (Susan) of Spring Hill, Kansas; sister Shirley Pierce (Robert) of Paola, Kansas; brother Gary Honn (Jane) of Garnett, Kansas; six grandchildren Richard Honn (Michelle) of Baldwin City, Kansas, David Honn (Julie) of Overland Park, Kansas, Lori Honn of Williamsburg, Kansas, Catherine Moore of Spring Hill, Kansas, Aubrey Shrum (Jason) of Derby, Kansas, and Brandi Rake (John) of Olathe, Kansas; and twelve great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Prairie Paws Animal Shelter c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
