RESIDENCE HISTORY: She grew up in a rural area near Tunnel Hill, Illinois. She also lived in Carbondale, Illinois, and Kalamazoo, Michigan as a student. She also lived from 1947 to 1952, Romulus, Michigan; 1952 to 1954, Huntington, Indiana; 1954 to 1959, Milan Michigan; 1959 to 1963, Stephens Point, Wisconsin and, 1963 to 1975, Orange City, Iowa. She moved to rural Princeton, Kansas, in 1975, and Anchorage, Alaska, in July of 2001. EDUCATION: Marjorie graduated from Carbondale (Illinois) High School with the class of 1940. In 1942, she graduated from Southern Illinois University with a teaching certificate. In 1947, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Michigan University, and received her Masters of Arts in Library Science from the University of Michigan, in 1952. OCCUPATION & BUSINESS: Marjorie was a teacher and professor at several schools. From 1942 to 1943, she taught at Mt. Olive School in Vienna, Illinois; 1947 to 1952, was English teacher and Librarian at Romulus (Michigan) High School; 1953 to 1954, English Instructor at Huntington (Indiana) College; 1954 to 1959, Milan (Michigan) High School; 1964 to 1975, English Instructor and Librarian at Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa; and, 1976 to 1987, English teacher and school librarian at Williamsburg (Kansas) High School, retiring in 1987. After her retirement, she substitute taught at Williamsburg (Kansas) schools from 1987 to 1992. From 1994 to 1999, she was a teacher at Small World, International ESL Program, Lawrence, Kansas. GOVERNMENT SERVICE: She served in the United States Women`s Army Air Corp, from March 29, 1943, to October 21, 1945, during World War II, attaining the rank of Corporal. She received commendations including Good Conduct Medal, two Overseas Service Bars; and, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with five Bronze Service Stars. MEMBERSHIPS: She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lawrence, Kansas. In recent years, she had been attending First Presbyterian Church, Anchorage, Alaska. She was also a member of the Association of American University Women, of which she was the 1996 Outstanding Member; American Association of Retired Teachers, serving as Vice-President in 1995; and American Association of Retired Persons. MARRIAGE: On June 17, 1944, Marjorie was united in marriage with Howard Nelson Schutter at Tacoma, Washington. He preceded her in death on August 25, 1993. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004. OFFICIATING CLERGY: The Rev. Ray Fancher, The First Presbyterian Church, Lawrence, Kansas. IN STATE: Mrs. Schutter will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to the service hour, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Thursday evening. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas, with Military Honors by Warren Black Post #60, American Legion. MEMORIALS: The family suggests memorials to Small World, International ESL Program, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
