Marilyn was the oldest of four children born to Bruce and Maxine (Hutton) Roush on July 10, 1940 at Ottawa, Kansas. She graduated from Princeton High School in 1958.
Marilyn was united in marriage to Kenneth Dean New on January 3, 1959 at Chanute, Kansas. They became the parents of four children: Tammy, Randy, Debby, and Rhonda. They lived in Richmond, Kansas until 1967 when they moved to Paola. Their 65th wedding anniversary was January 3, 2024.
Marilyn was beautiful, sassy, ornery, and selfless. She was a fun-loving soul. She worked as a bookkeeper at Union Gas when they first moved to Paola. Later, she ran the Paola Country Club restaurant, American Legion restaurant, and Miami County Sale Barn restaurant. She was a very well-known cook and baker. She and her husband bought Frank's Tavern in 1978, serving some of the greatest tenderloins, fried fish, mountain oysters, steaks, and boiled shrimp in Miami County for over a decade. Her last employment before retiring was at the Price Chopper Bakery in Paola. More often than not, she could be found stirring up something delicious, dancing around the kitchen like a boss babe with her favorite tunes in the background. Marilyn was most known for her delicious homemade pies which were second to none. Whenever there was a gathering with friends or family, more likely than not, there was a game of pitch or dominoes involved.
After retiring, Kenny and Marilyn thoroughly enjoyed traveling. Some of their favorite vacations were to Branson, Missouri; Dallas and Brownsville, Texas; Marco Island, Florida; cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean; camping in their RV at Rodrock Lake, Miola Lake, Melvern Lake, Pomona Lake, LaCygne Lake, and Hillsdale Lake. The number of trips and camping adventures they took with their family and closest friends are too numerous to count.
Marilyn was a member of the Paola United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher in her younger years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Rhonda, her son Randy, and her brother Charles.
She is survived by her husband Ken of the home; daughter Tammy Bell (Tony) of rural Osawatomie; daughter Debby Stout (Shane) of rural Lane; son-in-law Mike McDonald of Gardner; sister Carolyn Berry of Harris; brother Rick Roush (Meredith) of Leavenworth; 11 grandchildren: Jennifer McCord (Nick), Jeremy Bell (Kristi), Quentin New (Fran), Haley New, Tynan New, Ashtyn New (Dawson Blatt), Steffany Madden (Josh), Kaylee Hurt (Trevor), Kelsey Nolte (Anthony), Dylan McDonald (Kelly Keefe), and Savannah McDonald (Austin Madl); 18 great grandchildren: Carter, Tanner, and Harper McCord; Logan, Samuel, Alex, and Grant Bell; Marcus, Camille, Damian, and Emilia New; Cohen Blatt; Jayden and Sayge Madden; Kaydee and Maycee Hurt; Grayson and Brogan Nolte; and a host of other relatives and friends.
