Marcus Dwayne McGee-Simms, 26, of San Antonio, TX, previously of Pomona, KS, died September 23, 2019. Marcus was born March 1, 1993 in the state of Maryland. When Marcus was fifteen, he joined the family of Bobby and Tonya Simms and officially claimed their name the next year on October 1, 2009 when his adoption was final. Marcus attended West Franklin Schools where he participated and excelled in track, basketball, baseball, and football. During this time, he built very close relationships with many of his teammates, classmates, teachers and coaches. Marcus graduated from West Franklin High School in 2011. Following high school, Marcus attended Ottawa University where he was a member of the OU Braves football team and was part of the 2011-12 KCAC Undefeated Conference Championship team. During that time, Marcus was able to locate his biological mother and decided to move to Boerne, TX to get reacquainted with her and his biological family. Marcus is survived by his parents Bobby and Tonya Simms of Pomona; sister, Jaime Simms and boyfriend Johar Moss along with their son Kelcen; brother, Justin Simms and wife Marie and their children Tyson and Paislee, brother, Joshua Simms and girlfriend Amber Weir, and a very close cousin, Cody Bowman, all of Kansas; grandmother, Juanita Simms of Rantoul; girlfriend, Naiila Hill and their son Kayden Michael McGee of Texas. Marcus also leaves behind his biological mother and maternal family in Texas, and Daniel, Jerad, and Jake Canady also of Kansas. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and very close friends. Marcus was preceded in death by Jamie Canady, grandmother Sandy Griffin and grandfathers Chuck Simms and Pat Patterson. A Celebration of Life will take place on October 20, 2019 at 2:00 pm at The Bottle House located at 204 S. Walnut Street in Ottawa, KS. The family plans to set up a hardship fund for the purpose of assisting West Franklin School District students. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Marcus McGee-Simms Hardship Fund. Donation opportunities will be available at the Celebration of Life and can also be mailed to Bobby and Tonya Simms c/o Marcus McGee-Simms Hardship Fund at 409 E. Franklin Street, Pomona, KS 66076.
