Mabel Leota Bauer

Mabel Leota Bauer, 98, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Friday, September 30, 2016, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. Family will meet with friends from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M., Tuesday morning prior to service at the church. Private family interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa. Mabel was born Monday, September 9, 1918, in Finney County, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Amelia (Hassebrock) Meyer. She was the granddaughter and niece of two early settlers of southwest Kansas, John Hassebrock and Henry Meyer. Her father was a homesteader of land located one mile east of US Hwy 83, 13 miles south of Garden City. She moved to Ottawa, Kansas from Garden City, Kansas in 1991 and to Lawrence, Kansas in 2002. She graduated from Garden City High School with the class of 1936 and was a member of the National Honor Society. Mabel was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. Mabel was united in marriage with Martin F. Bauer September 9, 1940, in Sharon, Kansas. He preceded her in death February 14, 2001. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Amelia Meyer; three brothers, Walter Meyer, Harold Meyer, and Virgil Meyer; twin sisters, Margaret and Mary Meyer; infant brother, Arthur Meyer; son-in-law, Rick Jewell; and granddaughter, Pamela Sullentrup. Survivors include her five children, Virginia Sullentrup and husband George of Washington, Missouri, Darlene Smith and husband William of Boerne, Texas, Kenneth Bauer and wife Jenny of Naples, Florida, Eileen Jewell of Dodge City, and Lois Bauer and husband Steve Mitchell of Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She was a devoted lifelong homemaker. Mabel enjoyed fancy work and crocheting.
