Mabel Frances Disque was born January 11, 1913, at Overbrook, Kansas. She was the daughter of William M. and Nancy E. (Terwillegar) Kingery. She and her husband, Chester, lived on their farm at Pleasant Grove for forty-two years until her husband's retirement in 1978. For the past twenty-four years, Mabel made her home in Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, until her death Monday, September 16, 2002, at the age of eighty-nine years. She was a lifelong homemaker and member of Church of the Brethren in Ottawa. Mabel enjoyed her childhood. She used to reminisce about how she and her brothers and sisters would ride to school on a pony named Casey and if they were a little slow getting on his back, 'ole Casey' would go to school without them and head to his very own stall at the school! She was quite a seamstress. She would window shop at all of the stores, then buy fabric and make a very good copy. One of her grandnieces thought that she was the most stylish dresser of all her aunts. Actually, she said that she was the most stylish older woman she knew and often wondered where she got her clothes...refusing to believe Mabel had made the clothes herself. After her grandchildren arrived, she spent many hours sewing new outfits for them. However, she would be most impatient with David, Nanci and Kelly when they refused to 'clean up' and try the clothes on for picture taking time. She loved to cook and bake and her specialties were pies, cakes and dinner rolls. On December 11, 1935, Mabel was united in marriage with Chester Lee Disque at Pleasant Grove, Kansas. Mable once described she and Chester as 'Good ole Americans.' He preceded her in death on July 6, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Everett Kingery and Lonzie Kingery; and, two sisters, Florence Bond and Myrtle Kampschroeder. She is survived by her son, Jim Disque and his wife, Patty, of Murray Hill, New Jersey; grandson, David Disque of New York City, New York; and, two granddaughters, Nanci Disque Uher of Atlanta, Georgia, and Kelly Disque Cullen of New York City, New York. Mabel was very close to her brothers and sisters and proud of her family. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2002.
