Lucille Verona Meyer was born on Tuesday, February 4, 1908, in Elk City, Kansas, to Walter Milton and Martha (Buchanan) Schwatken. Lucille lived in Elk City, Independence and Matfield Green, all in Kansas, before moving to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas, in 1943, where she made her home until her death on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at the age of ninety-nine years. Lucille graduated from Elk City High School with the class of 1926, attended two years at Emporia State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate, and graduated from Ottawa University in 1960. She was a school teacher from the age of eighteen, when she taught in a one room school in Montgomery County, Kansas. After raising her sons, she resumed her teaching career at Emery Green School east of Ottawa. She then taught second grade sixteen years at Lincoln School in Ottawa, retiring in 1974. Lucille was a sixty-four year member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, where she was the oldest living member. She was active in numerous church and community groups, a member of Business & Professional Women, where she was selected 'Woman of the Year' for 1969 - 1970 and worked with the state B.P.W. organization. She belonged to several bridge clubs and the Garden Club in Ottawa, did volunteer work with 'Breakfast Buddies' through ECKAN, participated in PATH and Heart to Heart, helped with the Bloodmobile and served many years on the election board. On August 29, 1930, Lucille was united in marriage with Edward Victor Martin Meyer in Independence, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1976. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Erbin Schwatken. Mrs. Meyer is survived by three sons, Ronald E. Meyer and his wife, Betty, of Overland Park, KS, Dr. Donald V. Meyer and his wife, Cindy, of Topeka, KS, Dr. Robert M. Meyer and his wife, Judy, of Fort Collins, CO; sister, Betty Jean Bailey of San Francisco, CA; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and twenty-one nieces and nephews. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from First United Methodist Church in Ottawa at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2007, where the family will meet with friends from 12:30 to 2:00 prior to the service. IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Meyer at Dengel & Son Mortuary from 7 to 9:00 Thursday evening. CEMETERY: Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.
