Loyd M. “Scrib” Scribner, 87, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Family will meet with friends following the graveside service at Dengel & Son Mortuary from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. Scrib was born on Thursday, March 11, 1926 in Mesquite, Texas, the son of Charles Athel and Helen Isabel (Miller) Scribner. He lived several places in eastern Kansas, including Atchison, Quenemo, Paola and Wellsville, moving to Ottawa in 1938. Scrib attended school at the Wykoff Community in rural Ottawa and graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1943. In 1963 Scrib was united in marriage with Joanne (Wright) Baldwin at Wellsville, Kansas. They were later divorced. Scrib is survived by his three daughters, Mary Stauffer of Parsons, Kansas, Becci Young of Wichita, Kansas, and Judy Doehling of Overland Park, Kansas; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and brother, James Stubenrauch of Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Scribner; daughter, Kathy Scribner; parents, Charles and Helen Scribner; birth mother, Lillie Massey; two sisters, Bonnie Overstreet, and Aubrey McCabe; and brother, John Meier. He worked forty-three years for Kansas City Power & Light, retiring on December 31, 1986. He also was co-owner of A & S Motor Repair Service and was the owner of Holes & Poles Service Company. Scrib served during World War II in the United States Marine Corp 1st Division from March 1944 until May 1946, attaining the rank of Corporal and receiving the Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic Occupation Ribbon. He served in the South Pacific in the first Marine wave, and was part of the invading forces at Okinawa. After the war he was sent to China for occupation duty. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa Lodge #18, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Warren Black Post #60, American Legion, Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
