Loy Raymond Holmes

Loy Raymond Holmes, age 61, of rural Paola, Kansas, died February 13, 2018 at Olathe Hospice House. Loy was born July 12, 1956, the son of Harvey and Edith (Buchholtz) Holmes. He was their only child. Loy grew up in Overland Park and graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School with the Class of 1974. Loy was united in marriage to Jill Ann Cuthbertson on November 18, 1978 at the Paola Methodist Church. They made their home in Paola and became the parents of two children, Ray and DeeAnna. His wife Jill died unexpectedly at the early age of 47 on March 30, 2004. Loy was a farmer. His home was on his parents' 100-acre farm south of Paola. He had a menagerie of animals on his farm that included llamas, cattle, donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, and buffalo. He enjoyed going to livestock sales and socializing with his friends. It was a weekly event for him. While his children were growing up, Loy enjoyed watching his daughter DeeAnna play volleyball as well as other sporting events and also watching his son Ray compete in rodeos. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his children Ray (Alaina) Holmes of Mulberry, KS and DeeAnna (Ronnie) Burk of rural Paola; five grandchildren Jake and Bailey Holmes and Griffin, Skylar, and Arlie Burk; many other relatives and friends. Cremation. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Osawatomie Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Loy can be made to the Olathe Hospice House or Cowboys for Cancer Crisis Fund and sent in care of Dengel & Son Mortuary - Crematory, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS, 66071.
