Louise Reed VanHorn was born July 23, 1902, in the Greenwood Community of Franklin County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Clarence and Lizzie (Davis) Reed. Louise's great-grandfather, Harrison Reed, purchased land and established the Greenwood Community, where Louise lived most of her life until moving to Pomona in 1969 and Topeka in 1986, where she made her home until her death Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the age of ninety-nine years. She graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1919 and Kansas State Agricultural College (KSU) in Manhattan in 1923. She was a lifelong homemaker. Louise was very active in the Greenwood Baptist Church until moving to Pomona, where she became a member of the Pomona United Methodist Church. She was a long time member of the Greenwood Grange and always involved in Extension, 4-H programs, and other community activities. Louise was leader of one of the first 4-H clubs in Franklin County in the early 1930's. In 1957, she and her husband received the Master Farmer and Homemaker Award. On May 30, 1923, Louise was united in marriage with Harold H. VanHorn at Manhattan, Kansas. He preceded her in death March 29, 1985. She is also preceded in death by her sister, Leona Bodenhamer and brother, Robert Reed. She is survived by two daughters, Marjorie L. Atkins of Topeka, Dorothy E. Ingle and her husband, Allan, of Topeka; son, Dr. H. H. 'Jack' VanHorn, Jr., and his wife, Cleta, of Gainesville, Florida; ten grandchildren, John Atkins, Bruce Atkins, David Ingle, Paul Ingle, Mark Ingle, Eric VanHorn, Craig VanHorn, Jill Andrews, Amy Thomas, Laura Nelson; and, fourteen great-grandchildren, Christopher Atkins, Andrew Ingle, Ryan Ingle, Michael Ingle, Amy Ingle, Autumn Ingle, Abby Thomas, Lyndsay Thomas, Ethan Thomas, Taylor VanHorn, Margaret VanHorn, Roxane VanHorn, Duncan Nelson, and Logan Nelson. SERVICES: Family will meet at Greenwood Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, for graveside services followed by memorial services where the public is invited which will be held from Greenwood Baptist Church 2:00 p.m. Thursday. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Pastor Bob Miller. IN STATE: Mrs. VanHorn will lie in state from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Dengel & Son Mortuary, where the family will meet with friends 7 to 8:00 Wednesday evening. CEMETERY: Greenwood Cemetery southwest of Ottawa.
