Louis E. Ferns, 75 of Vasser, Kansas, died Friday, June 21, 2013. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 24, 2013, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family met with friends one hour prior to services. Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas. Louis was born on Saturday, October 30, 1937, in Canon City, Colorado, the son of Joseph William “Joe” and Viola Ruth “Vi” (Wemmer) Ferns. He moved to Vasser, Kansas from Texas in 2005. Louis graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1956. Following his graduation he attended Washburn University. He went on to learn various trades and with each place of employment he gained knowledge and skill. He worked with his dad, Joe, as a baker in his early years at the Martha Washington Bakery. After his schooling he went on to work for Santa Fe Railroad and later as a mechanical engineer for Hydra-Tool, from which he retired. On January 31, 1959 Louis was united in marriage with Carolyn Humble in Ottawa, Kansas. They lived in Topeka, Kansas and had a daughter, Trudi JoLynn. They moved to Texas in 1975. Years later they divorced. Survivors include his daughter, Trudi DeRouen and husband John of Granbury, Texas; three grandchildren, John Braeden DeRouen, Keeton Joseph DeRouen and Rylan Lynn DeRouen all of Granbury, Texas; two sisters, Bonnie Lue Ferns of Lawrence, Kansas and JoEllen Hall and husband J.B. of Ottawa, Kansas; former wife, Carolyn Humble of Granbury, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe on May 15, 2000 and, Vi on June 21, 2010. Louis was an active member of Caddo Grove Masonic Lodge #352 A.F. & A.M. in Joshua, Texas. He was a dedicated member of Michigan Valley Congregational Church in Quenemo, Kansas. Louis enjoyed drag racing, antique cars of the 50's and 60's eras, western movies, and most importantly music.
