Lorraine "Kitty" Knecht, a beloved long-time resident of Paola, Kansas, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, at the Miami County Medical Center in Paola, at the age of 92.
Born on October 8, 1932, in San Angelo, Texas, Kitty was the daughter of Claude M. and Flo Viola (Ferguson) Cotton. During her childhood she lived in Clovis, New Mexico, and later moved to Louisburg, Kansas, when her grandfather, E.J. Ferguson retired from the railroad. It was there they opened Ferguson’s Orchard. Kitty graduated from Louisburg High School, and met the love of her life, George E. Knecht. Together, they raised three children—Gregory, Michael, and Kathy—and built a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to family.
A dedicated homemaker, Kitty was also passionately involved in the Paola community. She was an advocate and support for youth athletics and enjoyed modeling for local retail fashion stores. Her talents extended beyond the home as she gave time to working as a nursing assistant for Dr. P. F. Gatley, helped grow the family business, Knecht Equipment Company, and proudly served in many volunteer roles, where her leadership and steadfast support made a lasting impact. Kitty's service to her community was wide-ranging. She was President of the Altar Society of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, President of the Hospital Auxiliary, and President of the Shamrock Study Club. A dedicated member of P.E.O., the American Legion, and Board member of the Extension Service. Kitty was known for her generosity, compassion, and commitment to improving the lives of others. Whether as a volunteer, a friend, or a neighbor, her kindness and selflessness were felt by all who knew her.
Outside of her community service, Kitty had a zest for life that was truly infectious. She loved golf, ballroom dancing, and was an enthusiastic participant in water aerobics with her “Mermaids” group. Well into her later years, she stayed active and vibrant, fueled by her love of travel, fashion, and a remarkable ability to connect with people. Even after the loss of her beloved George in 2003, Kitty remained independent, strong, and full of life.
Kitty’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her class, grace, thoughtfulness, and energetic spirit. Kitty’s legacy will never be forgotten.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Claud and Flo Coitton, her husband George Knecht, and her son Greg Knecht, as well as her son-in-law Al Thompson. Kitty is survived by her children, Michael Knecht (Cheryl) and Kathy Thompson; her grandchildren, Eryn Knecht (Brian Gibson), Brett Knecht, and Brandon Thompson, Justin Thompson, Jason (Samantha) Thompson, Jacob Thompson, and Jordan Thompson, and her great-grandchildren, Shaylan, Brandon, Koen and Joss Gibson, and Emma Thompson. Her cousin, who she was very close with, Marilyn (Alan) Gregston. Her sister-in-laws Marjorie George and Rita Thomas. She also leaves behind many cousins, family members, and friends who will miss her dearly.
