Lois Maxine Sumner, 92, of Carbondale, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at Peterson Assisted Living, Osage City, Kansas. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 9, 2021, at Baxter/Evergreen Mound Cemetery in Ottawa. Maxine was born Tuesday, July 30, 1929, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Walter Dale and Mamie Holda Corena (Davis) Gunselman. She lived in the Ottawa area from 1954 until 1990. She graduated from Soldier High School in Soldier, Kansas, with the class of 1946. Maxine was united in marriage with Robert O. Sumner April 3, 1948, at Holton, Kansas. He preceded her in death January 1, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mamie Gunselman; daughter, Sandra Sage; brothers, Lloyd and Fred Gunselman; sister, Arlene Moore and granddaughter, Nikki Lehman. Survivors include her sons, Dennis Sumner and his wife, Cathy of Ottawa, Kansas and Melvin Sumner and his wife, Peggy also of Ottawa, Kansas, daughter, Kathy Smith and her husband, Ron of Carbondale, Kansas, grandchildren, Michael Smith, Corey Sumner, Staci Stroud-Sumner, Joseph Smith, Brian Smith, and Travis Sage, and great grandchildren, Aaron Lehman, Tanner Sumner, Dillon Smith, Alyx Smith, Breanna Bogner, Jackson Stroud, Kinsley Smith, Kaleb Smith, Kayda Smith, and Kooper Smith. Maxine worked twenty-one years as a garment maker at the H.D. Lee Company in Ottawa, retiring in the late 1980’s. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, crocheting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
