Lois E. Blackburn was born January 23, 1919, at Fairfax, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of William Arthur and Ethel Mae (Phinney) Shaffer. As a child, she moved from Oklahoma to Franklin County, Kansas, where she made her home, until her death Friday, January 16, 2004, at the age of eighty-four years. Lois attended Williamsburg schools. She was a lifelong homemaker. She also held jobs at Mode O'Day, Kramer Drug Store, and The Owl Donut Shop. Lois was a member of the Extension Homemakers Unit of Ottawa. She was also a member and treasurer of the Homewood Friendly Club. Mrs. Blackburn enjoyed all her homemaking skills. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, and crocheting, creating many lovely items for her family to cherish through the years. She also loved the outdoors and caring for her garden. On January 29, 1938, Lois was united in marriage with Ernest Arthur Blackburn at Ottawa. He preceded her in death on December 19, 1996. She is also preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Hattie Shaffer; brother, William Shaffer; two sisters, Georgia Fisher, Helen Rempel; and great-grandchild, Cassondra Blackburn. She is survived by her son, Arthur D. Blackburn and his wife, Claire, of Richmond; two brothers, Calvin Shaffer and his wife, Dorothy, of Ottawa, Benjamin Shaffer and his wife, Florence, of Great Bend; two sisters, Sarah Shaffer of Ottawa, Florence Rees and her husband, Larry, of Benton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Rick Blackburn, Ken Blackburn, Bud Blackburn, Sharon Pridgen; and twelve great-grandchildren. SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from the Dengel & Son Mortuary 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2004. OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Duane Pedrow IN STATE: Mrs. Blackburn will lie in state at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 5:00 p.m. Sunday to the service hour where the family will meet with friends 7 -8 Monday evening.
