Lloyd C. Thornburg, 69, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017, at Life Care Center of Osawatomie. Cremation is planned with family meeting with friends from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Lloyd was born Thursday, April 17, 1947, in Knoxville, Iowa, the son of Florian and Olive (Burnham) Thornburg. He grew up in Iowa, and attended school at Pleasantville High School, graduating in 1965. He graduated in 1970 from Washburn University in Topeka, receiving his bachelor of arts in education. In the early 1990s, Lloyd moved to Franklin County, where he made his home until his death. Lloyd was united in marriage to Sandy Albaugh (Schnepp) in 1990, in Anamosa, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2007. He was also preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his four children, Jenny Elliott and husband Greg of Olathe, Joe Thornburg of Arkansas City, Brandie Wright and husband Scottie of Oskaloosa, and Shelby Thornburg and fiancé Billy Harris of Ottawa; brother, Robert Thornburg and wife Gigi Graf of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Janet Drake and husband Tom, and Shirley Thornburg all of Des Moines, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Kaitlyn Elliott, Elise Elliott, Brodie Wright, and Hallie Wright. For 30 years, he was a hog buyer. He then became a truck driver for Martin Marietta Quarry in Ottawa for 12 years, retiring in 2012. In 2014, Lloyd was inducted into the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He also played basketball at Washburn University where he was on the 1967-1968 NAIA Championship team. Lloyd enjoyed being outside and being in the pasture. He was a workaholic, and also enjoyed cutting wood, driving his old truck and going back home to Iowa. Above all, he loved family gatherings and his grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions to Good Shepherd Hospice c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
