Leonard Albert Sweetwood, 92, of Hartford, Kansas, formerly of Williamsburg, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, March 25, 2016, at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Family will meet with friends from 11:30 P.M. to 12:30 P.M., Friday, March 25, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Leonard was born Monday, October 1, 1923, in Williamsburg, Kansas, to George Albert and Letha M. (Adolph) Sweetwood. He lived in Williamsburg, Ottawa, and Kansas City, Kansas, before moving to Hartford, where he has resided for the last 35 years. He attended schools in Williamsburg. He served in the United States Army for 3 years during World War II. Leonard was united in marriage with Betty Imogene Gieber January 12, 1944, in Ottawa, Kansas. She preceded him in death in 2006. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Nina Guy in 2007; father, George Sweetwood in 1948; and mother, Letha Sweetwood in 1930. Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Gunnels of Kansas City, Kansas; three grandchildren, Justin Hanson of Kansas City, Kansas, Joseph Guy also of Kansas City, Kansas, and Mary Guy of Springfield, Missouri; and eight great grandchildren. Leonard was an over-the-road truck driver for Mid-America Trucking in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a member of the Hartford Church of Christ and the Teamsters Union of Kansas City, Missouri. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. The family suggests memorial contributions to American Cancer Society c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
