Leonard Hoopes, 85, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021, at Rock Creek of Ottawa. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 12, 2021, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Leonard was born November 29, 1935, in Pomona, Kansas, the son of Arthur S. and Ruth (Baker) Hoopes. He was a lifelong Ottawa resident. He graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1954. Leonard served in the United States Army from November 1954 to November 1956 attaining the rank of PFC with the 82nd Airborne Division. On July 27, 1958, Leonard was united in marriage to Connie Sue Servaes in Pomona, Kansas. She preceded him in death on October 4, 2013. Leonard was a plumber for 40 years. He owned and operated Hoopes Plumbing in Ottawa from the mid-1960’s to late 1980’s. He also worked for the Northern Pipeline 16 years, retiring in 2005. After Leonard’s retirement, he worked at Walmart in the garden center and was a greeter. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Ottawa, serving on the church board for several years and as Chairman for two years. Leonard was also a member of NAPHCC, Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club and Eagles Club. He was an assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop #127, assistant coach for Babe Ruth Baseball, and helped coach Pee Wee and Little League ball teams. He was also president of the Ottawa Youth Wrestling Association. Leonard and his wife Connie worked with the mentally handicapped having them in their home, taking them to Royals baseball games, camping, fishing, and boating. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Leonard Todd Hoopes, son Monty Lee Hoopes, siblings, Allene Hendrix, Wayne Hoopes, and Charles “Chuck” Hoopes. Survivors include his two children, Heidi Woodward and husband Mark of Big Sandy, Texas, and P.J. Hoopes of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister Anabel Burgess of Ottawa; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
