Raymond Leon Burgoon, 75, Pomona, passed away Friday, July 25, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. Cremation is planned. Family members are set to meet with friends 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 28, 2014, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Graveside inurnment services are planned for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, with military honors by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Leon was born Saturday, Aug. 27, 1938, in Silkville, Kansas, the son of Raymond Eugene “Cotton” and Ruby Lillian (Welch) Burgoon. He was a lifelong Pomona resident. He graduated from Pomona High School with the Class of 1956 and continued his education at Emporia State University, graduating in 1971, with a bachelor’s degree. He enlisted in Hq & Hq Battery 127th Field Artillery Battalion, 35th Infantry Division, Kansas Army National Guard of Ottawa. Leon later served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Corps. Leon was united in marriage with Mary A. Eastabrooks Nov. 17, 1961, in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of the home. Survivors also include his three children, Anita Fannin and husband, Rod, Carbondale, Cheryl Mortensen and husband, Darren, Olathe, and Mike Burgoon and wife, Annette, Olathe; nine grandchildren, Todd, Vance and Conner Fannin, Cody, Miranda and Trinity Burgoon, and Chaz, Nate and Matthew Mortensen; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Eastabrooks, Houston, Texas, and Esther Burgoon-Cordle, Lawrence; and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, James Richard “Jimmy Dick” Burgoon. Leon owned and operated Burgoon Plumbing & Electric. He also worked for Raymond Burgoon Construction, and was an area mechanic for Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, where he retired. He was a member of the Pomona Lions Club, and the United States Submarine Veterans (Topeka-Jefferson City base). He was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed hunting, making crafts, coin collecting and playing pool. The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice or Franklin County Mid-America Nutrition Program through Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
