Lena Phillips

Lena Phillips, age 102, of Osawatomie, Kansas, passed away April 11, 2017 at the Life Care Center Nursing Home in Osawatomie. Lena was born February 13, 1915 in Springfield, Missouri. She was the daughter of David and Emma (Summers) Brown. Lena was united in marriage to James Ralph Stewart for 32 years and he preceded her in death in 1967. They became the parents of two children. She was later married to Sam Phillips and he preceded her in death. Lena was a Kansas City, Kansas resident for most of her life. She was heavily involved in her church’s missionary support programs. She was the missionary president of the Metropolitan Church of the Nazarene for 20 years. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family and playing games with friends. She really loved people and was always someone who was upbeat and smiling. She had a charismatic personality and was a real classy lady who always dressed to a T. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her brother Carter Waters, two sisters Zelma Cross and Ruth Ahlquist, and one son-in-law Jim Chisam. She is survived by her children Wanda Chisam of rural Parker, Kansas and Ralph Stewart and his wife Patty of Osawatomie; 11 grandchildren Deborah Kuehne of rural Parker, Kansas, Diannia Brents and her husband Clifford of Edwardsville, Kansas, Dylane Cornelius and her husband Richard of Paola, Kansas, Doug Chisam and his wife Gara of rural Parker, Kansas, James Ralph Stewart III and his wife Shirley of Tennessee, Randy Stewart and his wife Jeanne of Missouri, Terry R. Stewart and his wife Jane of Spring Hill, Kansas, Robert M. Stewart and his wife Cherrie of Lane, Kansas, and Tammy Riggs and her husband Josh of Parker, Kansas, Joe Stewart and his wife April of Girard, and Michael Gorachey and his wife Carmen; 30 great grandchildren; and numerous great, great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, April 14, 2017 at Dengel & Son Mortuary – Crematory, 605 O’Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS, 66064 with the funeral following at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas. Pallbearers will be James Ralph Stewart III, Randy Stewart, Terry R. Stewart, Robert Stewart, Austin Chisam and Andy Cornelius. Honorary pallbearers will be Cliff Brents, Richard Cornelius, and Doug Chisam. Contributions in memory of Lena are to the Alzheimer’s Association and can be sent in care of the funeral home.
