Lena Barnhart was born October 1, 1916, in Coffey County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Robert H. and Zelma (Bixby) McCracken. She lived in rural Franklin and Douglas Counties all of her married life, moving to the Lawrence area in 1984, where she made her home until her death Friday, May 11, 2001, at the age of eighty-four years. She attended several Coffey County schools as a child. Mrs. Barnhart was a lifelong homemaker. She also helped her husband with janitorial duties and was a cook at Appanoose Schools. She also worked at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant in Desoto, H.D. Lee in Ottawa, and Shirley's Caf' in Overbrook. On November 18, 1933, Lena was united in marriage with Dewey M. Barnhart at Ottawa, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1974. Also, preceding her in death is her son, Vernon Keith Barnhart, in 1998. Surviving are three sons, Dewey Leroy Barnhart and his wife, Nellie, of Lawrence, Donny D. Barnhart and his wife, Beverly, of Lawrence, Robert M. Barnhart and his wife, Karen, of Afton, Oklahoma; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Keith Barnhart; two sisters, Vida Stolz of Escondido, California, Thelma Wagoner of Yellville, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Lena Barnhart, 84, of Lawrence, KS, died Friday, May 11, 2001 at Eudora Nursing Center in Eudora, KS. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 13, 2001, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at 10:30 AM at Dean Cemetery, north of Pomona, Franklin County, Kansas. Rev. Francis Stockton will be officiating.
