Lawrence T. “Larry” Klingele, 73, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2016, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 21, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A rosary will be said at 10:00 A.M., prior to service. Family requests if attending services, to help celebrate his life by wearing a brightly colored Hawaiian-style shirt. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Larry was born Wednesday, November 18, 1942, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Emil Julius and Mary Cecilia (Algaier) Klingele. Larry lived in various locations throughout the United States including Kansas, Florida, Virginia, Minnesota, from 1973 to 1977, and returned in 1978 to Ottawa, where he made his home until his death. He graduated from Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas, with the class of 1960. He continued his education at Donnelly Junior College, Kansas City, Kansas, graduating in 1962 with an associate of arts in drafting, and Central Technical Institute, Kansas City, Kansas, attending one year studying electronics. Larry joined the United States Navy from 1967 to October 1973 serving as a petty officer first class sonar operator. Larry was united in marriage to Janine Marie Emerson August 8, 1969, in Newport, Rhode Island. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his five children, Maria Jean Klingele and Darren Longo of Independence, Missouri, Brenda Ann Klingele and Kent Kramer of Winchester, Kansas, Paul Robert Klingele and Amy of Lenexa, Kansas, David Brian Klingele and Jennifer of Manhattan, Kansas, and John Patrick Klingele and Catherine of Paola, Kansas; siblings, Eugene Klingele and Joyce of Basehor, Kansas, Kenneth Klingele and Karen of Independence, Missouri, Sharon Philpot of Georgia and Richard Klingele of Florida; sister-in-law, Delores Jones and Roy of Kansas City, Kansas; and fifteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and eldest sister, Barbara Ann Stout. Larry was employed with the Ottawa Power Plant as a maintenance electrician for twenty-eight years, retiring in 2006. He was currently working for Home Depot as an electrical and plumbing associate from 2014 to date. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as the liturgical music minister for eighteen years. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3018. Larry taught sign language for USD 290 for five years during the mid 2000s. Larry was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather, whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. He also enjoyed folk music, reading, and sharing his unlimited generosity by helping any and all in need. He was planning to resume his love of sailing on his new boat “Blue Moon” this summer sharing his knowledge of sailing with the grandchildren.
