Laverne Frances Lyons was born on Tuesday, November 13, 1917, in Princeton, Kansas. She was the daughter of Claude Clarence and Mary Myrtle (Henderson) Spencer. A lifelong Franklin County, Kansas resident, Laverne made her home in Princeton, until her death Thursday, September 15, 2005, at the age of eighty-seven years. Laverne graduated from Princeton High School with the class of 1935. She was a lifelong member of the Princeton Christian Church. Laverne enjoyed working in the Princeton schools and cooking at Central Heights School, where everyone, students and staff, looked forward to mealtime. She was especially known for her out-of-this-world cinnamon rolls (and the dough fights, usually started by 'Laverne'). She was employed by the schools for a total of twenty-eight years, retiring in 1984. Following retirement, she continued cooking. Even when she was unable to stand, due to her hip, she sat on a stool at the kitchen counter and made cinnamon rolls. When that became too difficult, she enjoyed her word-search books and picked out walnuts for others to enjoy. She enjoyed crewel and cross-stitch embroidery, creating many lovely items for her family and friends to cherish. In her younger days, she enjoyed traveling. She and Gene enjoyed short week-end excursions and trips to Colorado to visit her brother and his family. Laverne had a heart of gold and was the sweetest, most caring person anyone could ever hope to meet. She had an 'open' door to every animal, whether pet or stray, and would always feed and care for them as if she had raised them. Cats, dogs, squirrels, opossum, even skunks were welcome. All the neighborhood animals enjoyed her generosity and unconditional love for them. She was so proud of her family, and dearly loved every minute she spent with them and all her friends. On January 29, 1944, Laverne was united in marriage with Albert Eugene
