Larry J. Larkin, age 90, of Richmond, Kansas, formerly of Ottawa, died Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Richmond Healthcare Center in Richmond, Kansas. He was born on Tuesday, August 3, 1920, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the son of Louis David and Bessie Pearl (Bilbrey) Larkin. He moved with his family to Ottawa in 1925, and lived most of his life in the Ottawa and Franklin County area. Larry graduated from Ottawa High School. Larry drove a cab for Pontiac Cab in 1940; a bus five years for Sunflower Transport Company, taking workers to Hercules Powder Plant; a semi-trailer truck for Boyd Truck Line, Kansas City, Kansas; hauled explosives three years for Riss & Company, Kansas City, Missouri to Texas, Colorado and South Dakota; worked as a truck driver for Bennett Creamery Company and in California for Convair, overhauling B36 bombers; and as a brick layer. Larry worked part-time for the Ottawa Police Department as a third shift dispatcher and night patrolman, and drove nine years for Holton Transport, hauling gasoline; for Star Boat Craft in Pomona; and at Bob’s Truck Stop. He worked ten years for Skyhook and retired from Ottawa Truck in 1982. He also had worked part-time evenings at local service stations and owned a Texaco Station on north Main in Ottawa. Larry was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ottawa and member and Past Exalted Ruler of Ottawa Lodge #803, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. On Tuesday, May 25, 1982, Larry was united in marriage with Helen Nadine (Crocker) Johnson in Vinita, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on September 29, 2005. He is survived by his: Son-Calvin Larkin of Olathe, Kansas; Son-David C. Larkin of San Diego, California; Daughter-Verdia Mae Gray of Wellsville, Kansas; Stepson-Larry G. Johnson of Independence, Missouri; Stepdaughter-Judy Faye Farrell of Florida; Stepson-Charles N. Johnson of Lawrence, Kansas; Brother-Richard H. Larkin of Ottawa, Kansas; Sister-Eloise M. Milton of Ottawa, Kansas; Sister-Arrietta L. Moyer of Las Cruces, New Mexico; Several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Step Grandchildren, and Step-Great Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his: Wife-Helen Nadine Larkin; Parents-Louis David and Bessie Pearl Larkin and a Son-Steven E. Larkin. SERVICES: Cremation is planned. A private family Inurnment will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Pomona, Kansas.
