Lanny Max Slifer, 81, of Ottawa, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2023 at this home.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, August 28, 2023, at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas.

Family will meet with friends from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M., Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa.

Lanny was born on Monday, July 13, 1942 in Strong City, Kansas, the son of Cecil and Sadie (Persym) Slifer. He grew up in the Overbrook area and graduated from Overbrook High School with the class of 1960. Lanny lived in Ottawa since 1982, moving from Jacksonville, North Carolina.

He was united in marriage to Janet Osha Spradley October 13, 1972 at Lawrence, Indiana. She survives of the home.

Lanny served in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1982 serving two tours in Vietnam earning the National Defense Service Metal, Good Conduct Metal and Marine Corps Expeditionary Metal to name a few. During Lanny’s enlistment he attended photo school becoming a combat photographer. He later became an instructor at DINFOS (Defense Information School) in Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, achieving the top instructor role, teach all ranks and branches of the military.

He was a member of the Ottawa Nazarene Church and enjoyed serving the church with his time and talents. Lanny enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Lanny was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Sadie Slifer, brothers, Larry Slifer and Henry Moore, sisters, Pat Hibner and Agnes Harrison and a still born infant daughter, Amy Slifer.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, children, John Slifer (Debbie) of Oskaloosa, Kansas, Paul Slifer (Jayne) of Centropolis, David Slifer of Lawrence, Elizabeth Slifer of Texas, and Stacey Powell (Victor) of Springfield, Missouri; brother, Gary Slifer of Ottawa; nine grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hope House or Ottawa Nazarene Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
