Kristie L. Batten, 44, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019, due to her short but hard-fought battle with cancer. Cremation is planned. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 10, 2019, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Kristie was born October 9, 1974, in Ottawa, the daughter of Keith and Sherry (Smith) Nelson. She was a lifelong Ottawa resident. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1993 and attended Butler County Community College. While in high school she worked at Walmart for several years, returning to Walmart after college. Kristie was united in marriage to Christopher Batten May 26, 2000, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three children, Bayleigh Nelson, Dysen Batten and Trenidy Batten all of the home; parents, Keith and Sherry Nelson of Ottawa; brother, Brandon Nelson of Osage City; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Nelson of Osawatomie; niece, Chelsey Nelson and friend Derrick Miller of Cheyenne, Wyoming; nephew, Dylan Nelson and wife Hallie of Ottawa; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jason Nelson. Kristie was currently employed by Hasty Awards of Ottawa as a Programing Supervisor for 14 years. She loved spending time with her family and watching the kids play sports. Kristie would always make sure that every child on the team received a personalized name tag for their equipment bag. The team would honor the coaches with a handmade plaque to commemorate the season, regardless of the outcome, thanking them for their time and effort. Kristie was talented when it came to handcrafted items. She was exceptionally good at crafting Christmas ornaments and loved giving them to family and friends. On many occasions she would volunteer the whole family to assist in pre-dawn setup and passing out medals at various marathons in the Kansas City area. Kristie’s loss is felt by all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed. The family suggests memorial contributions to Olathe Health Hospice House c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S.
