Kathryne Lou Berger, 75, Osawatomie, formerly of Paola, died May 15, 2015, at Olathe Hospice House. Kathy Quartier was born Aug. 4, 1939, at Chicago Lying-In Hospital to Norma Jane "Peggy" Van Dorn and Ernest John Quartier. She was the oldest of seven children. She was raised in Danville, Ill., and Hammond, Ind. She was a member of the Hammond High School class of 1957. She earned her GED later in life. She raised her four children in Sauk Village, Ill., where she was the owner of Miss Kathy"s Beauty Salon. She also did office work and worked in gift shops. Kathy was married to Edward J. Berger on June 4, 1976. He preceded her in death in 2006. Upon his death, she moved to Paola to be closer to her daughter. She loved the community of Paola where she made many friends and became active as a member of the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church, its Bible studies and First Thursday lunches. Kathy was a member of the Miami County Medical Center Auxiliary and volunteered in the hospital gift shop. She belonged to the Getaway Gals Red Hat Club. She enjoyed cooking, reading, singing karaoke, Bible study and Royals baseball. She was known for the hats she wore. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jonna Quartier and Carole Whiffing. Survivors include her children, Terrie Cole (Larry) of rural Paola, John Michael Rackl of Port Charlotte, Fla., Vickie Bulkowski of Mesa, Ariz., and Joe Bulkowski (Mita) of Santee, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Bette Lee (Hank) of Hobart, Ind., Mary Rogers (Steve) of Fishers, Ind., and Robyn Hubbard (Quint) of Whiting, Ind.; and brother Rick Brooks (Judy) of North Carolina. Memorials may be made to the Lighthouse Presbyterian Church.
