Kathryn R. Ashburn, 62, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 25, 2019, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at the mortuary. Interment Berea Cemetery, Franklin County with military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard. Kathryn was born September 29, 1956, in Lamar, Missouri, the daughter of Raymond Dean and Phyllis Jane (Fast) Carpenter. She lived in the Ottawa and Richmond area. She graduated from Central Heights High School with the class of 1974 continuing her education at Neosho County Community College receiving her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate and attended Emporia State University. Kathryn served 4 years in the Army National Guard and the Army National Reserve attaining the rank of PV1. She completed a 9-week Telecommunications Center Operator’s Course in the National Guard finishing in August 1980. Survivors include two daughters, Christina R. Wilkins of Lawrence and Trinity J.R. Carpenter also of Lawrence; two sisters, Jacqueline Beddo of Princeton and Kelley Hennessey and husband Bob of Richmond; and thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Kathryn also helped raise Francesca Johnston of Wichita, Jason Johnson and wife Ivy of Baldwin City, Casey Porter, Nina Sitlington, and Candre Pierce each of Lawrence and many others. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Ted Ashburn; father, Raymond D. Carpenter; daughter, Cindy Patrick; and brother-in-law, Donnie Beddo. Kathryn was employed by Ottawa USD 290 as a custodian from 2013 to the present time. She was a member of the Centropolis Baptist Church. She was involved in 4-H and enjoyed camping, riding horses and sports with her grandchildren. Her passion was art, specifically oil painting. Her favorite artist was Salvador Dali.
