Karl Shawver

Karl Victor Shawver , age 89, passed away Thursday, June 10th, 2010, at Cedar Lake Village in Olathe, Kansas. He was born in Paola, Kansas on September 18th, 1920, to Ella Horton Shawver and Karl Victor Shawver, Sr. Karl, or "Bud" as he was known to his many friends, was married to Priscilla Jane Botz of Washington, D.C., formerly of Ridgewood, N. J., on December 16th, 1944 in La Jolla, CA. They became the parents of three children. He graduated from Paola High School in 1937 and went on to graduate with a B.A. degree from the University of Kansas in 1941, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He entered the Kansas School of Law in 1942 and was admitted to the Kansas Bar Association before enlisting in the Marine Corps on May 4, 1942. After serving 2 years of active duty in the South Pacific, Karl returned to La Jolla, CA where he served in the Marine Corp Reserve, with the rank of Captain, until being honorably discharged in 1949. Karl was an attorney in Paola, KS for over 50 years. He practiced law with his father, Karl V. Shawver, Sr., a Kansas Law School graduate who started his own career with his father, Frank Shawver of Osawatomie, KS. Their combined law practice in Miami County spanned over 100 years. Karl"s first love was flying, he flew for over 50 years and was instrument rated for single engine aircraft. In later years he took up gliders and enjoyed the peace and quiet of soaring at the leisure of the wind. Karl is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jane Shawver, of Cedar Lake Village in Olathe, KS; three children, Sandy Janssen of Kearney, NE , Gail Frapolli of St. Louis, MO, and Steve Shawver of Mequon, WI; a sister, Betty Reitz of Eudora, KS; three grandsons; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. All of whom will miss him greatly. A "Celebration of Life" for Karl will be held at the Paola Country Club on Saturday, June 26th, from 10am until 12:30 pm.
