June M. Edwards

June 8, 1931 — December 3, 2014

June M. Edwards, age 83, resident of Louisburg, KS, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 3, 2014, at Olathe Medical Center. June was born June 8, 1931 in Melrose, KS, the daughter of Fern and Leslie Smith. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1949. She attended nursing school in Phoenix, AZ and graduated in 1952 with a registered nursing degree. Shortly after, she married Robert Brooks, an airman in the United States Air Force. They lived in many places including Kansas, Illinois, France, Wisconsin, and Newfoundland, during Robert"s military career. They divorced in 1963. June spent the next 20 years raising her children while working as a registered nurse. She worked in long term care and hospitals in Wisconsin until 1970. At that time she moved with her children to Kansas to be close to family. She worked at the Parsons State Hospital from 1970 to 1983. In 1983, June moved to Phoenix, AZ and continued to work in the field of nursing until her retirement in 1996. She was married a short time to Tom Edwards. They divorced in 1997. During her retirement years in Phoenix, she was an active member of Washington Avenue Senior Center, serving as president for a time. She enjoyed playing shuffleboard, but card playing gave her the most pleasure. She was a euchre instructor, part of a weekly bridge group, and played numerous types of card games several times a week. June moved to Louisburg, KS in 2008 where she lived until her death. She enjoyed going to her granddaughters" school events and was an avid gardener with an amazing green thumb. Anyone who visited was shown her plants and flowers. June was also a tremendous fan of many local college and professional sports teams. So much that she had a roster and schedule for each team. June"s love of card playing never stopped. At any family gathering with children and grandchildren, there was always a friendly game of Spades, where she was almost always part of the winning team. June was preceded in death by a younger sister, Amelia Peterson; two younger brothers, Joseph Smith and Gerald Smith; her mother, Fern Smith; and her father, Leslie Smith. Survivors include sisters, Norma Meredith, Wellsville, KS, and Pauline Dickens, Scotia, CA; three sons, Steven Brooks, Parsons, KS; Michael Brooks, Olathe, KS; and Charles Brooks, Chanute, KS; two daughters, Diane Brooks, Topeka, KS; and Karen Coffroth and husband John, Louisburg, KS; grandchildren, Eric, J. D., Megan and Kelsey; and great grandchild, Dakota. June will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and a faithful and loyal friend, generous to all.
