Joyce Maxine Wasmund, age 94, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Rock Creek of Ottawa.
Visitation will be held from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, Friday, April 14, 2023, at Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S Hickory St., Ottawa, Kansas 66067. Funeral service will place take at 3:00 pm, also at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Princeton Cemetery, in Princeton, Kansas. Joyce was born on Monday, November 26, 1928, in Lynch, Nebraska, the daughter of Hurley James and Elfreda (Dunaway) Binkerd. She attended Ottawa High School and graduated from Council Grove High School with the class of 1946.
Joyce was united in marriage with Earl Leroy Wasmund on July 23, 1945, at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 3, 2004.
She was a homemaker and learned to be a dairy farmer from her husband. Joyce learned about cooking, housekeeping, raising a family and a lot more from the Extension Service information and through interaction with friends. She was also a substitute mail carrier in Princeton for a few years.
Joyce was passionate about her family most of all, but also volunteering. She volunteered with Kansas State Research and Extension, specifically 4-H, United Methodist Women, Farm Bureau Organization, as well the Ransom Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hurley and Elfreda Binkerd, husband, Earl Wasmund, daughter, Priscilla Wasmund, foster son, Sy Hess, brothers, Marshall Binkerd, James Binkerd, Nyle Binkerd and Walter Binkerd, granddaughter Christina McAndrew, step-grandson, Todd Thurston, great granddaughter, Hally Yust, and son-in-law, Larry Thurston.
Survivors include her daughters, Marilyn McAndrew and her husband, Bill, of Merritt Island, Florida, Linda Thurston, of Ottawa, Kansas, Patty Robinson and her husband, Jim, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Julie Langston and her husband, Paul, of Olathe, Kansas, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made payable to the Franklin County 4-H Development Fund or Ottawa First United Methodist Church, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S Hickory St., Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
