Joyce Marie Green, 73, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, December 13, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church, Ottawa. A reception will be held immediately following the service at The Bottle House, 204 S. Walnut, Ottawa. Inurnment Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Kansas. Joyce was born June 27, 1946, in Ottawa, the daughter of Lloyd Albert and Agnes Chastain (Baker) Schweitzer. She grew up in rural Princeton, Kansas until she was eighteen years old and then she and her mother moved to Ottawa, where she lived while attending college. Joyce lived in Baldwin City, Kansas from 1969 to 1971 returning to Ottawa where she made her home until her death. Joyce graduated from Williamsburg High School in Williamsburg, Kansas with the class of 1964; Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas with a BA in Elementary Education in 1968 and a MA in Elementary Counseling in 1974. Joyce was united in marriage with Robert Ward “Bob” Green December 27, 1971 at the First Baptist Church in Ottawa. He survives of their home. Survivors also include daughter, Amy, her husband, Dr. Beatty Suiter and their children, Emily, Sydney and Audrey Suiter of Overland Park, Kansas and son, Jason L. Green and his wife Alysia and their children, Hudson Lloyd and Vivian of Olathe, Kansas; brother, Jerry Schweitzer and his wife, Marguerite of McPherson, Kansas; sister, Lois Gray and her husband, Howard of Pratt, Kansas and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Agnes Schweitzer and her sister, Jeanne Sackman. Joyce taught fourth grade at Wellsville Elementary School from 1968 to 1972; was an Elementary School Counselor at Sacred Heart School, Lincoln Grade School and Eisenhower Elementary School, all in Ottawa. She also held the designation of Licensed Professional Counselor and did professional counseling. She was a member of Ottawa First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, New Dimensions Circle and served on the Executive UMW Board; PEO Sisterhood, Chapter GL and Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed visiting her grandfather’s home in Switzerland and visiting Australia, Italy and Japan and many wonderful trips in their motor home. Her children were her ministry and she showed it by her love and attention to them.
