Josephine Barron Chavez, 81, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 after a brief illness. Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ottawa. Josephine was born December 10, 1935 in Ottawa, one of eleven children born to Eutimio and Josefa Barron. She was united in marriage to Anthony G. Chavez November 5, 1960 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Osage City, Kansas. “Fina” was a devoted and loving wife; supporting her husband “Tony” in all his endeavors and eccentricities. Her sons, Joseph and Martin, always knew they were loved. “Mom” always reinforced the fact that things would be okay. Many miles were driven to practices, games and school events. Many hours were spent helping with homework. Yet, she always made time for the fun stuff as well; shooting baskets, making cookies, watching TV shows and taking her boys on fast food dates. In every sense of the word, she was the “perfect” mom. She was extremely proud of the fact that she returned to the work force later in life, retiring as an executive assistant with State Farm Insurance in her 70s. Josephine excelled at being a grandmother. Her grandkids were the most important people in her life. She was always available for a song, dance or snuggle on her lap. We would often hear her chatting and gossiping with them until the wee hours of the morning during sleepovers. “Nana” was always there to make it better. As she cherished them, they adored her. Josephine had many interests. She loved gardening, macramé, reading novels and cooking. She often fell asleep listening to mysteries on the radio. Recently she had developed a passion for politics, often leading to impromptu debates, of which Josephine would refuse to concede defeat. She failed to understand that yelling at the TV would not produce her desired results. Josephine is survived by her husband of 56 years, Anthony G. Chavez. Her oldest son, Joseph and his wife Paige; and their children Emily and Jacob. Her youngest son, Martin and his wife Katie; and their children Allyson and Hannah. Sisters Pablita Sanchez, Mary Barron and Phyllis Garcia. As well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Her sense of humor, kindness and enchilada making abilities will be missed. The family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Catholic Church c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
