John R. Plummer passed away peacefully in his home in Paola, KS early Monday morning, Aug. 8, 2011 at the age of 93. Memorials to the Miami County Medical Center or the Lakin Methodist Church. John was born September 30, 1917 in Burlington Jct., Missouri to Roy C. and Hattie LaVinia Fullenwieder Plummer. He joined four older brothers, Marvin (Mike), Harold (Curt), Milford (Duffy), and Philman (Fid) and an older sister, Iris. In 1924 another sister, Bonnie was welcomed by the family. He was united in marriage to LaVonne Durand on July 30, 1945 in Glenwood, Iowa. To this union,two children were born Stanley R. in 1951 and Pamela J. in 1954. John served in the United States Army during WWII seeing action in Germany just south of the Battle of the Bulge. He earned the rank of Staff Sgt. He was very proud of his service and had many memories of those 5 years that he shared with family and friends time and time again. After he and LaVonne were married, John attended watchmaker's school in Kansas City. He honed his trade in Dighton, Ks before establishing Plummer Jewelry in Lakin, Ks in 1951 which he had until 1987. He spent 10+ years as a bus driver for the Lakin School District. He was the assistant rural mail carrier in Lakin for a total of 15+ years. John was preceded in death by his parents, his 4 brothers, 2 sisters and his wife LaVonne. He is survived by his son Stan and wife Gayle Paola, Ks his daughter Pam and husband Dennis of Wichita, Ks, grandsons Mitch and Joel Plummer, step grandchildren Danny and Deana Miller, 4 step great grandchildren, 5 sister-in-laws, 1 brother-in-law and many,many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
