John Edward Maynard, age, 81 of Louisburg, KS passed away April 13, 2011 at Manor Care of Overland Park, KS. He was born on October 10, 1929, the son of Frank E. and Elsie R. (Huffman) Maynard. Ed was drafted in the United States Army on the 14th day of May, 1951. His initial training in the Army took place at Camp Crowder MO. After his training he was shipped directly to the Korean War Theatre, assigned as an infantry rifleman with company B 180th infantry 45th Division. His ribbon awards were, Korean Combat Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, and one Overseas Service Bar. After one year and 22 days of combat, Ed was returned home on February 2, 1953 with an honorable discharge. He became a farm hand in general and made that his life, working for several farmers in the area. His favorite hobbies were working the earth planting his tomatoes and other vegetables. Back in his early days he raised rabbits and dressed them to sell to his customers. He also loved his dogs, his favorite companions. Ed was a member of American Legion Post #250, Louisburg, KS, and a life time member of the VFW Post #4409, Harrisonville, MO He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Paul, Winfred, Charley and Junior Maynard, one sister, Irene Spears, four nephews and one niece. Survivors include three sisters, Stella Barnes, Baldwin, KS; Alberta Whitaker, Louisburg, KS; and Edna Kircher, Drexel, MO; and three generations of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Penwell " Gabel Louisburg Chapel, Louisburg, KS. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday,at the Chapel. Burial will follow in the Louisburg Cemetery with military honors by John P. Hand Post #250. Pallbearers are Billy Pottorff, Ryan Shaffer, Dennis Kircher, Warren Knop, Steve Knop and Wayne Knop. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Spears, Chuck Spears, Kevin Maynard, Chad Maynard, Robert Kircher, Tommy Kerr, Gary Kerr and Roger Maynard. The family suggests contributions to John P. Hand Post #250, American Legion Auxiliary or Wayside Waifs.
