John L Lyder, age 92, of Paola,Kansas, passed away August 5, 2012 at the Ottawa Retirement Center, Ottawa, Kansas. John was born on October 9, 1919 to John and Edna Ullom Lyder in Paola, Kansas. He graduated from Paola High School in 1937. While in high school he was active in football and basketball, and was an avid KU fan. After high school he joined the United States Army in 1940, and served as a pilot in Europe during WW II. Following the service John worked for the United States Postal Service and retired in 1984. He also raised cattle and enjoyed bowling, water skiing, and golf. John was married to Margie Reiter in 1971 and enjoyed 15 years of marriage before her passing in January 1986. He married Dorothy Hardacre in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Margie, and his brother Lyle Lyder. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; children Linda Goyer of Ottawa, Kansas, and Beverly Garrah of Naples, Florida; step daughter Paula Dinges of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; step son Phil Brown of Phoenix, Arizona; sister Carolee Cortner of Parkville, Missouri; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Plum Creek United Methodist Church.
