John D. Briggs, 77, Ottawa, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at the Olathe Medical Center. He was born March 14, 1929, to John Dewey and Bertice (McGuire) Starne at Joplin, Mo. He grew up in Fort Scott and graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1947. He later attended Fort Scott Junior College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. From May 1951 to May 1953, he served in the U.S. Army as a supply sergeant during the Korean War, stationed in Japan and Korea. He married Helen M. Diebolt June 19, 1954, at Olpe. She survives. He also lived in Kansas City, Mo., Lakewood, Colo., Olathe and had lived in Ottawa since 1979. He worked for the Social Security Administration for 22 years as a claims representative, working at Kansas City and after the mid-1970s, in the Ottawa office. He retired in 1987. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a former charter member of the Ottawa chapter of Quail Unlimited and a former member of the Olathe Lions Club. Survivors also include two sons, David J. Briggs, Olathe, and Gregory K. Briggs, Spring Hill; two daughters, Judy L. Briggs and Mary J. Smith, both of Topeka; and two grandchildren, John
