John A. Scott, 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, September 21, 2015, at his home in Pomona, Kansas, with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Family will meet with friends from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, Sepember 25, 2015, at the mortuary. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona, Kansas, with military honors by Whiteman Air Force Base. John was born Monday, May 10, 1926, in Quenemo, Kansas, the son of Charles Clayton and Gertrude (Hopkins) Scott. He was raised on a farm south of Pomona. He was a resident of Franklin County most of his life. He and his wife, Eula lived in La Cygne, for a short time where he farmed and had a small dairy. John also farmed at Waverly, and later south of Pomona, with Eula and five children. He attended North Illinois Grade School in rural Franklin County. John served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II from July 1944 to July 1946. He served one year at Pearl Harbor. While serving his country he completed Airplane Mechanical School, Military Communication, and Morse code instruction. His decorations and citations included the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. John was united in marriage with Eula Mae Bennett April 18, 1947, in Ottawa, Kansas. She survives of their home. Other survivors include his three daughters and their spouses, Linda and Dwight Anderson of Apopka, Florida, Carol and Fred Hamilton of Centropolis, and Christine and George Martinez of Kansas City, Missouri; two sons and their spouses, John David and Tina Scott of Wellsville, and Galen and Vada Scott of Ocala, Florida; eighteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; four brothers, Clarence Scott of Pomona, Ben Scott of Washburn, Missouri, Charles Scott of Ottawa, and Wallace Scott of Golden City, Missouri; and sister, Icel Holliday of Arkansas City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Gertrude Scott; three brothers, Dan, Roger, and Norman Scott; two sisters, Audrey Johnston and Joyce Craig; son-in-law, Timothy Allen Mohler (killed in Vietnam); great-granddaughter, Amber Lynn Cassity; and grandson, John Austin Scott. John was employed at Skyhook Corporation as a welder. He was also employed at the Hercules Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto for fifteen years. He was foreman over the power house and also worked in the water department and garage. After retirement, he worked part-time for the City of Pomona. He was a former member of the First Assembly of God and a current member of the Community Foursquare Church, Ottawa. He enjoyed farming, raising cattle, and hogs. He also enjoyed antique cars and tractors. He loved working in his shop rebuilding old tractors and building different items from scrap. John loved life, his family and people. He never knew a stranger. He will be remembered by so many with his greeting and wonderful smile he always wore. John was one of the hardest working men many ever knew, but also had one of the most tender hearts. He will be deeply missed and remain in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
