Joanne Louise Smith, 83, of Ottawa, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Richmond Healthcare & Rehabilitation. Graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Mapleton Cemetery, Mapleton, Kansas. Family will meet with friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Dengel & Son Mortuary. Joanne was born Saturday, November 11, 1932, in Champaign, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Lucille (Farquhar) Bond. She was raised on the family farm outside Champaign, and graduated from Unity High School in Tolono, Illinois, with the class of 1950. After high school, she attended Business College and became employed by the University of Illinois in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Joanne met her future husband, Dr. JC “Doc” Smith while working at the University of Illinois. Joanne and Doc were married December 29, 1955, in Champaign, Illinois, at the Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2010. They moved to Manhattan, Kansas, in 1955 and in 1958, moved to Ottawa, Kansas. Joanne always considered Illinois to be her home. Joanne worked beside her husband at Ottawa Veterinary Hospital from 1968 to 2003. She maintained memberships in Sweet Adelines, the Ottawa Garden Club, Sequel Club, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ottawa. Joanne was a long time animal lover and her life revolved around her family. Joanne is survived by her children, brother, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They include two sons, Dr. Ed Smith and his wife, Kelly of Ottawa; and Tim Smith and his wife, Bev of Paola; two daughters, Cathy Pope and her husband, Dean of Paola, and Sue Angermayer and her husband Steve of Pittsburg; brother, Bob Bond and his wife Lois of Monticello, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Dr. Adam Smith and his wife, Ali, Caitlin Smith, Amanda Karns and her husband Schuylar, Kyle Pope, Tana Smith, Taylor Smith, Cole Angermayer, and Lauren Angermayer; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Dr. JC “Doc” Smith.
